42 Ways To Optimize WordPress SEO And Get Ranked On Google In 2018
1. Prevent Search Engine From Wrong Indexing
This is the first step you should do just after installation WordPress blog on your server. Log in to the dashboard of your WordPress Blog. Setting > Reading then reading and tick the box of “discourage search engines from indexing this site“.
You have to turn it on coz search engine bots will start crawling your site just after a site come to life. You can see some unwanted demo pages are there just after installation of your WordPress blog. This is like “hello world” post and comment.
If the wrong pages get indexed then it will affect your search engine rank. You should untick this option at the end of complete SEO friendly setup of your WordPress blog.
2. Set WordPress URL Properly
Make sure that your site URL and your WordPress URL is same. Don’t use both at www.yordomain.com or yourdomain.com in two options.
Permalink plays a great role in SEO. If your blog URL is not SEO friendly, you may lose the chance to get ranked in search engines.
Go to Settings > Permalinks. Click on Post name option and save it.
Now your permalinks are SEO friendly.
You can also “Day and name” or “Month and name” option. But in this case, your contents will appear as old in search engine after a specific period of time.
For example: If your blog URL is like “creativemantram.com/2016/05/wordpress-seo“, no matter how much time you will update but this may show as old content. Also, you may lose viewers. Coz if a person finds 2016 in 2018, he or she may not visit your site.
Don’t create any situation which creates confusion for your viewers.
4. Save Space On Media
If you use the default option, it will automatically generate media files with three different sizes and a thumbnail too. It will make an extra load on your server.
So make this option as below (i.e. change all into 0) to prevent automatic generation of different sized images.
You have to check the featured image of your blog them and start to use this size for every single feature images of your blog.
I am using a 750×400 sized image here.
5. Delete Unwanted Data
You can see the “Hello world!” post and demo comments just after installation of your WordPress blog. Delete those unwanted files. Clear all comments, posts, and pages.
4 thing you should delete just after WordPress Installation
- “Hello, world!” From Post
- “Sample Page” From Page
- “Hello Dolly Plugin” From Plugin
- “A WordPress Commenter” Demo comment.
6. Choose A Lightweight Responsive Theme
Your theme should be simple in design and lightweight. A heavy theme will affect the loading speed of your blog which is a great factor to optimized WordPress blog SEO. Change the default theme.
In this blog, I am using genesis framework and magazine pro theme from StudioPress. The design may be slightly different coz I have added some additional spices CSS code to design my way.
If you have a limited budget, you can go for the free theme too. But make sure that your theme is free from any issue and compatible with the latest version of WordPress. High speedy free themes I have used previously
Note: Don’t use any nulled or free version of the premium theme from any random site. Coz they will either provide you the old version or it may have some malware inside the code which tough to find. It may redirect your blog URL to other or display various ads and pop-ups automatically or even your blog get hacked.
You can scan the theme from VirusTotal to check virus online. Still, I would not recommend you to use nulled one. If you want to select a free theme just find one WordPress theme list. Coz one simple mistake will ruin the whole blogging career.
7. Add Keyword Inside Your Domain Name
You can add keyword inside your blog domain name to get better rank. Before that, you have to choose your blog niche. For example, if your blog niche on blogging then you can try domain name like probloggingguide.com, bloggingideas.com, quickblogging.com etc.
You can start without keyword while choosing a domain name. But it will help you to rank better in that particular niche.
8. Design Awesome Header Logo And Favicon
You have to consider some factors while designing a logo for your blog.
- Use Less than 3 colors
- Flexible Design
Length and width of favicon should always equal (i.e. 512×512). Otherwise, it will not fit in various social media pages and get stretched which shows less professionalism.
I have designed my blog logo and favicon from logomakr.
9. Rename Images Before Upload
Don’t upload any image without properly named it. A descriptive name helps with both content and image SEO (ranking images higher on Google Images). For example, don’t upload an image named DS0023 but use a descriptive name.

I use Adobe Photoshop and TinyPNG for all images you have seen on this blog.
Optimize Image After Upload: You can use various WordPress plugins to optimize images.
Even you can optimize images after upload, I would still suggest you optimize before upload. You should use them both for better result.
11. Image Alt Text
Alt text should same with the name of the image. Always rename the image properly before upload. Insert focus keyword inside the name of feature image of a post.
